Study success of bachelor degree students
Aims
The Dutch research universities seek to increase the study success of Bachelor students. Bacholor’s degree programmes lay the foundations for academic education and research, and student performance during the first cycle therefore deserves special attention. Drop-out rates need to be reduced if the growing demand for highly skilled labour is to be met.
The Dutch research universities aim at:
- improving the orientation and binding funtions of the first year
- reducing drop-out rates during the second and third years by half
- increasing the number of students who complete a Bachelor’s degree programme within four years
- achieving that 10% of students follow more courses than required by their programme

Preconditions for achieving these aims are:
- improving the transition from pre-university eduction to university education (including more opportunities for selection and transfer during the first year)
- increasing the variety of programmes and the variety within programmes (inspiring teaching offering special incentives to excellent students and support to weaker students)
- enhancing the appreciation of teaching within universities (space for and improvement of the professionalism of lecturers)
- fostering an academic community (small-scale teaching and new forms of bonding)
