Figures

Citation Impact scores

International impact scores show that Dutch research occupies third place at a global level:
3 percent of all citations made on an international basis refer to publications by Dutch authors.
This is an important indicator, as the scores relate to references made by academics to other academics, therefore demonstrating that they value one another’s work. The impact of Dutch articles is also steadily on the increase.

Participation in European research

Dutch research enjoys a high degree of success
when it comes to securing European funds for research. Of the €17.5 billion that was available
for the Sixth European Framework Programme (FP6), more than €1.2 billion was allocated to
the Netherlands. This saw our country become a net beneficiary. The success rate for Dutch
applications was 34 percent. This is way above the European average of 20 percent. The Dutch
universities played a major part in these figures.

This trend is continuing in the current FP7. Take, for instance, the first round of the starting
grants of the European Research Council (ERC). As much as nine percent of the budget
was committed to Dutch researchers. In absolute terms the Netherlands came out in
fourth place, behind the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Of the eighteen Dutch
winners, fifteen came from the universities. And of the countries in the top 5 in terms of
number of grants awarded, the Netherlands came out on top relative to the size of the
population.

Investment

The top position of Dutch universities is striking if we look at investment in research. The Netherlands is a long way from the top and happens to come in at around the European average. Dutch research therefore scores extremely highly relative to investment. The big question is, however, how long we can maintain this position. Many other countries have been investing more and more in university research and teaching over the past few years. Investment in the Netherlands has remained at the same level.
