In the new Times Higher Education-QS World Universities Rankings, five Dutch research universities have improved their positions. The University of Amsterdam is the best Dutch research university in the rankings, up four places to 49th, followed by Leiden (60th), Utrecht (70th), Delft (83rd), Rotterdam (108th), Maastricht (116th), Eindhoven (120th), Groningen (138th), Wageningen (155th), VU University Amsterdam (165th) and Twente (200th). With 11 universities in the top 200, the Netherlands occupies an excellent shared fifth position.
In terms of areas of expertise, the Dutch research universities are well represented in the top ranks. Delft University of Technology is 15th and Eindhoven University of Technology is 49th in engineering and IT, Leiden University is 29th and the University of Amsterdam 31st in arts and humanities, Utrecht University is 35th in natural sciences and the University of Amsterdam is 32nd in the social sciences.
