The Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is an internationally oriented research university which is closely associated with the city of Rotterdam. Its research and educational activities can be classified in three areas of expertise: Economics and Management, Medicine and Health, and Law, Culture and Society. The history of the Erasmus University Rotterdam dates back to 1913 with the inception of the Netherlands School of Commerce, which was converted to the National School of Economics (NEH) in 1939. The NEH gained worldwide renown not in the least due to the work of Nobel Prize laureate Jan Tinbergen (1903-1994). The merger of the NEH with the Medical Faculty Rotterdam (1966) resulted in the Erasmus University Rotterdam (1973). Nowadays the Erasmus University is consistently listed amongst the top universities in the world in rankings such as the Jiao-Tong and the THES.
The education offered at the EUR is academic as well as practical, focusing on the transfer and exchange of knowledge at the highest level, designed to teach students to analyse and solve economic, social, legal and medical problems in society. The student community at the Erasmus University Rotterdam is comprised of 114 nationalities. Scientific research at the EUR is traditionally based on a strong focus on society, drawing on the city and its surroundings as a source of inspiration. Research which is relevant for society is increasingly conducted in multidisciplinary teams.
