Tilburg University is a specialised research university concentrating on Economics, Business, Law, Social Sciences, Psychology and Humanities. The university was founded in 1927 as a School of Economics. Since 1986 it has been fully accredited as a research university specialized in Social Sciences and Humanities. In its educational and research programmes, the university is committed to addressing important issues in society at national and international levels. It does so by training people for positions of high responsibility in society and by contributing to socially sustainable solutions. Tilburg University draws on a rich tradition which nourishes the role of philosophy of life in its academic education and research.

According to the Journal of the European Economic Association, 2003, Tilburg University ranks second in Europe in Economics Research, and it acquired its AACSB International accreditation for business programmes in 2002. According to the Social Science Research Network, 2007, the university ranks first in Law in Europe. According to the Financial Times ranking 2007, the TiasNimbas Business School ranks sixth in Europe (eleventh worldwide) for Executive MBA.

As of 2008 Tilburg University offers a Liberal Arts Programme: a three-year multi-disciplinary undergraduate programme taught in English, for students with broad interests who want to be challenged.
