Profile University of Amsterdam

The Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is, according to the QS World University Rankings 2010, the highest ranking Dutch university. It combines the intellectual challenge of a comprehensive academic curriculum with Amsterdam’s vibrant and cosmopolitan environment. The seven major faculties have their campuses all over the city, some are located in historic buildings on the world renowned canals of Amsterdam and others are situated in state of the art laboratories and hospitals.

Amsterdam is the home of many international commercial enterprises such as Akzo Nobel, Fortis, Philips and Tom Tom, but also of leading cultural and media companies such as Endemol and Cirque du Soleil. These provide challenging internships and career opportunities for our students.

We encourage students to seek out inspiration outside their chosen field of study and opt for a minor in a different faculty. For those who are willing and able to go the extra mile, we have seriously challenging honours programmes. Often a quarter of the students come from abroad which makes for an international ambiance.

The University of Amsterdam is a member of the League of European Research Universities. Over the years four Nobel Prizes have been granted to professors of the University of Amsterdam as well as numerous Spinoza awards for academic excellence.
