International students in university programmes

 
The total number of students registered with a Dutch government-funded university on 1 October 2016 was 264,838. A proportion of these students have completed the prerequisite studies abroad and are not Dutch citizens (otherwise referred to as 'international students').
On 1 October 2016, 42,281 international students were registered at Dutch universities,  representing 15,9 % of the entire university student population in the Netherlands.

 

 

 

Origin of international students

 

Most international students come from EU countries. Germany is by far the most common country of origin among international students. The largest group of non-EU international students originates from China.
