Ratio of permanent to temporary staff
Over the past ten years the proportion of academic staff in permanent posts has fallen in relative terms, and the proportion of those on temporary contracts has risen. An explanation for this development is that an ever-increasing part of research funding is based on contracts and grants, which demands flexibility in staffing. In addition, programmes that are witnessing strong growth in student numbers make more use of temporary lecturers.
The professors, senior lecturers and support staff in universities are often in permanent posts.
