The VSNU is the association of the fourteen research universities in the Netherlands. With over 240,000 students, 8,400 doctorate conferrals and 83,000 publications per year (2011), they contribute to strengthening the Dutch knowledge economy. Dutch universities score very highly in the international sphere, given their positions in international rankings and the number of international research grants and subsidies they are awarded. They succeed in combining high-quality research with education and play an important part in facilitating knowledge transfer. With a total of 47,000 employees, the universities also often count among the largest local employers and exert a major impact on the local economy.
